This book presents in detail a pair of models of the economics of climate change. The models, called RICE (for the Regional Dynamic Integrated model of Climate and the Economy) and DICE (for the Dynamic Integrated Model of Climate and the Economy) build on the authors' earlier work, particularly their RICE and DICE models of the early s. The book explores the most important greenhouse gases that influence the climate system, technical terms associated with climate projections, and the different mechanisms impacting crop productivity and water balance. Adaptive and mitigative strategies are proposed to cope with negative effects of climate change in particular domains.

While there are several factors that contribute to global warming, such as natural changes in the Earth's inclination and revolution around the sun, by far the biggest factor is the emission of greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, chlorofluorocarbons, water vapor, and nitrous oxide are added at alarming rates to the atmosphere by daily human activity. This book discusses the effects of methane gas which causes severe global warming in the atmosphere. In the s the unconventional shale gas extraction increases in the .

But the main way human activity contributes to that warming—the emission of greenhouse gases, of which carbon dioxide is the most important—has effects other than simply on global temperature. Plants use carbon dioxide in photosynthesis—how they combine sunlight, water, and nutrients to build their fiber and fruit. Jonathan Adler is director of environmental studies at the Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington D.C., and the editor of The Costs of Kyoto: Climate Change Policy and Its Implications (), from which portions of this essay are adapted.. El Niño is the overhyped weather event of the decade. It has even made CNN’s “Larry King Live.” A natural warm spot in the Pacific Ocean.

Within only a few years, global warming has emerged from scientific speculation into an environmental threat of worldwide concern. Yet the scientific community remains uncertain as to the long-term trends and effects of climate change, and this uncertainty has been seized on as justification for inaction by an international community reluctant to bear the costs of policies to reduce greenhouse.

It is important for the reader to understand clearly the objectives of these papers. They are not an attempt to provide accurate predictions of what is going to happen in Australia over the next few decades. Rather they represent sensitivity studies, designed to illustrate to what extent we as a nation are dependent on the climate and likely to be affected by climatic change, and attempts to.

This book contains papers from a conference held in to consider the policy implications of the greenhouse effect and how to respond to the challenge of the predicted global warming. The ozone layer, 12 to 19 miles above Earth, protects life on Earth by absorbing harmful solar ultraviolet radiation.

When the ozone layer is depleted, more ultraviolet-B radiation than usual reaches Earth, increasing our risk of sunburn and skin cancer and warming Earth. Human-induced climate change is a serious concern, drawing increasing attention from the media, policy makers and citizens around the world.

This comprehensive and thought-provoking volume explains in easily understandable language the potential effects of climate change on our planet and our lives. Climate Change: Causes, Effects and Solutions examines the latest scientific findings without 5/5(1).
